Upward and Onward: The Fruits of Discipleship

Written by Ryan Evans on June 15th, 2018

This school year, Mr. Andrew Weiseth has been teaching biblical Apologetics to a combined class of our juniors and seniors. As they met together for their final class period last week, the seniors were given a platform to share a retrospective on their final year as Providence students, and talk about what was ‘worth it’ – what they would do again, do differently, the temptations and challenges they’ve faced, and what benefit they are taking with them as they graduate. Here are just a few of the highlights the seniors shared with the juniors before they spent time together in prayer for one another:

  • Other people are worth more than your time.
  • Distractions come in multiples. Nip the first one, and you’ll avoid the following five.
  • If the school rules ever irk you, always go to the scripture to discover the “why.” It makes all the difference.
  • Invest in relationship with your teachers – they have so much to offer you.
  • I found that starting my day with scripture and in prayer, committing myself to God and receiving His Word, to be non-negotiable.
  • Involve yourself in everything. It’s just like Uncle Nate (aka Mr. Morris) told us, “If you’re not having fun, you’re not working hard enough.” Working hard is what enables joy, not harms it.

In relaying these insights to the staff and parents of these students, Mr. Weiseth commented that the year together can be summarized by 1 Peter 3:15.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meakness and fear.

As parents, we rejoice to see the fruit of our labors as our children grow and mature. Through our partnership together of family, church, and school, we are realizing our goal: a culture of discipleship that helps students develop tender hearts, sharp minds, and biblical discernment. What a joy to see our seniors embrace the role of discipling their peers by imparting sound wisdom and encouraging one another to love and good deeds that reflect the values outlined in God’s Word.
